From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 3–Two connected stories (Pelican, 2008) by Adele Colvin tell about the life of Jesus from the perspective of a young donkey who hears from his mother how his grandmother carries Mary on the long journey to Bethlehem and is in the stable when shepherds and wise men come to worship the baby Jesus. She takes Mary, Joseph, and Jesus to Egypt when they flee King Herod, brings them back to Nazareth, and recounts events from Jesus's childhood. When the young donkey grows older, he carries Jesus into Jerusalem as people lay palm branches in the road. In the second story, this same donkey—now grown old—tells his grandchildren about that triumphant entry and the last week in Jesus's life, as the donkey witnesses the Last Supper, Christ's crucifixion, and his resurrection that first Easter. Implicit in the legacy handed down from one generation to another is the joy of knowing and humbly serving Jesus. Suzanne Mann narrates while music, mostly on guitar but sometimes including flute and organ, plays in the background. This blend of music and story effectively complements Mann's narration. Youngsters will take this telling to heart any time of the year.–Mary Jean Smith, Southside Elementary School, Lebanon, TN α(c) Copyright 2010. Jewish teachers have created legends, stories and fantastic elaborations of Scripture for thousands of years. In theis sense of Midrash, Adele Colvin has taken he foundational stories of the Christian faith and retold them through the voice of a generation of donkeys who were witnesses to the birth, life. death and resurrection of Jesus as well as the first journey of Paul. Through soft illustrations in three different books, children can follow along as they are read these tales of Jesus and Paul through the eyes of a donkey - one who carried Mary to the stable in Bethlehem, one who carried Jesus into Jerusalem for Passover, and one who transported Paul to Damascus and his first journey. In a conversational tone, the voice of the donkeys pass along the sacred story from one generation to the next, the same way families share stories with their children. As Ms. Colvin discloses, "the stories are based on scriptural narrative, but not to be considered as fact." These stories are best suited for young children who are still enamored with talking animals, the whimsy and magic of all things possible. But with these read-aloud books, further conversation can develop that leads to opening up the Bible to learn more about the characters and individuals to whom all these lovable donkeys introduce us. A lovely retelling of the birth of Christ for young children, The Story of Jesus as Told in The Donkeys' Tales offers this beautiful and magical tale from the animals' perspectives -- a popular style of storytelling that all children love. The Donkeys' Tales is a charming way to share Christmas with your child at bedtime, in Sunday school or for the Christmas pageant.

The CD will be released by Pelican this summer. I gave Peytie her copy of the CD yesterday and the following are very eloquent and heart-felt words that she sent to me last night.
"I just listened to the whole CD again - I am so moved by the music, I cry the whole time. Andy and Shaun have so much talent it is hard for me to grasp. The way the music grows and swells, the subtle changes, the way the Christmas carols weave in and out, the way the narration is so couched within the flow of sound...it gives me a thrill to think I am part of it. Please pass this along to them. I am speechless with admiration. "Among the Blessed" is my favorite song ever. I am grateful to God that this came my way...Much love, Peytie

"This flawlessly written book for children ages eight-up is framed by a grandfather donkey taking advantage of a rainy day to tell his two grandchildren donkeys stories about his associations with Jesus...Carmichael's illustrations are simple, clean representations of the Holy Land settings...Their richness lends interest and drama to these familiar stories"

April 5, 2009, Palm Sunday at St. Martin's Episcopal Church - Houston, Texas ---We had a few live "donkeys" and read from the Tale during our Palm Sunday liturgy. It was the first gathering of our most recently added service - a (9:30 a,m, :Family Service" to be held in our renovated "Old Church". Given the importance of this first service, we wanted everything to "go perfect"! And it did...could not haver gone any better! We had a record crowd of over 400 (this in addition to a crowd of well over 500 attending our traditional 9:00 service). The "Tale" was well received, and congregants waited in a long (and enthusiastic) line for Adele's signature on their personal copies. It really, really was an exciting day, and it made a powerful, tangible impact on our life together. It made Palm Sunday "come to life". We at St. Martin's very much admire the work Adele and Peyton have done in this series, and we hope there will be many more.......The Reverend Dr. Russell Levenson Jr.

I am delighted with this wonderful resource. The illustrations are plentiful and engaging. The text is profoundly Biblical and simply told. A donkey sees Jesus' journey to the cross through eyes very like the innocent eyes of a child. At Saint Luke's teachers will read The Donkeys' Tales and The Donkey's Easter Tale to children in chapel, Sunday school and our day school. As the priest in charge of Christian formation for children, I look forward to using these beautiful books.
